Two of my favorite painting lessons from college include:
First… Don't be intimidated by a white canvas. As an artist, starting each piece will be difficult if you're too concerned about making every mark on the canvas perfect. My teacher literally stomped on his art paper to prove that this is not a delicate process, nor perfect from start to finish. This showed me that the canvas is not something to be worshiped, but rather a tool to communicate with that works on my behalf.
Second... Paint Paint Paint! It's all about the practice of painting. This removes the feeling that I need to make my best painting every day (which I still always hope to do!). The goal is to keep up the discipline and focus to remain committed.
In short — Don't be intimidated and never stop painting!
